Descendants of slaves look back at emancipation

Benjamin Speller sat in a white wicker chair on his back porch as he told the tale of Harry and Fannie Bond, his great-grandparents kidnapped by pirates in Persia nearly 200 years ago.

Harry and Fannie were given their English names and sold into slavery in Maryland before going to Lewis Bond's plantation in Bertie County.
